8/22/2023 0 Comments Oil viscosity chart in fahrenheit![]() ![]() Polymerisation of this alpha-olefin results in the formation of synthetic oils of different viscosities and with added benefit of higher viscosity index than mineral oils. The most common monomer used in synthetic oil manufacture is alpha-olefin, a six-carbon primary alkene. Synthetic oils are usually of higher purity and offer thus a higher performance. Most lubricants, food grade or not, are based on mineral or synthetic oils of specific viscosities. This would lead to a catastrophic failure of the machine’s moving parts. If the moving metal surfaces come too close, metal-to-metal contact will lead to surface damage (scarring), and if the heat becomes high enough, surfaces can melt and fuse. In the coming weeks we will talk about synthetic vs conventional oils and how additives can improve a motor oil's performance. The main functions of a lubricant are to decrease the friction coefficient between moving surfaces, thus improving on machine performance with smaller energy inputs, as well as to help dissipate frictional heat. Consequently, the oil needs to pass extra tests like the Volkswagen VW 507 or the BMW Longlife 01. These oils meet SAE specifications but the manufacturers add some extra conditions. It can also happen that manufacturers create their own specific set of requirements for their engines. Brand specifications (OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer) You can learn more about API specifications on the API official site. ![]() As with ACEA specs, the specifications can be combined when the oil is suitable for both diesel and petrol engines. For example, an API SN oil is better than an API SJ. The lowest quality is the letter A, and each letter after A represents better quality. The second letter of the specification indicates its quality.
